Google’s Record-Breaking $32 Billion Wiz Deal as A Cybersecurity Power Play in the AI Era

In what could be one of the largest cybersecurity acquisitions in history, Google has announced a $32 billion all-cash deal to acquire Wiz, a cloud security powerhouse that has rapidly become a dominant player in protecting modern cloud infrastructure. If approved, this move will significantly expand Google Cloud’s security capabilities, allowing it to compete more aggressively against Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in the cloud security space. This isn’t Google’s first attempt at bringing Wiz under its umbrella. In July 2024, Google offered $23 billion for Wiz, but the deal was rejected.

Wiz, founded in 2020 by Assaf Rappaport and a team of Israeli cybersecurity veterans, has skyrocketed to prominence by providing a cloud-native security platform that integrates across major cloud providers like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud. Its ability to offer real-time visibility, risk prioritization, and rapid remediation has made it a favorite among enterprises, from startups to Fortune 500 giants.

The timing of this deal is no coincidence. As cloud adoption grows, so do the risks—misconfigurations, zero-day vulnerabilities, and supply chain attacks are now front and center in corporate risk assessments. With generative AI transforming security automation, Wiz’s cloud-native security platform will enhance Google Cloud’s ability to detect, prevent, and respond to threats faster than traditional security tools. More enterprises choose a mix of AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud rather than committing to a single provider. Wiz, already a multi-cloud security leader, gives Google an opportunity to expand beyond its own ecosystem.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian made it clear that this acquisition is about simplifying and democratizing cybersecurity, stating:

“Google Cloud and Wiz share a joint vision to make cybersecurity more accessible and simpler to use for organizations of any size and industry. Enabling more companies to prevent cyberattacks, including in very complex business software environments, will help organizations minimize the cost, disruption, and hassle caused by cybersecurity incidents.”

One of the biggest surprises in the deal is that Wiz will remain available across all major cloud providers—including direct competitors AWS and Microsoft Azure. But why does this matter? Enterprises are increasingly avoiding vendor lock-in and using a mix of cloud providers. Wiz gives Google an entry point into AWS and Azure clients who wouldn’t otherwise consider Google Cloud.

Instead of trying to force customers into its ecosystem, Google is embracing a more open approach, focusing on best-in-class security rather than exclusivity. Last but not least, by keeping Wiz independent, Google reduces antitrust concerns, making it easier for regulators to greenlight the deal.

Google’s acquisition is also a direct challenge to AWS and Microsoft Azure in the battle for cloud dominance. With cloud security now a boardroom priority amid rising cyber threats, Google is betting big that Wiz will give it a competitive edge.
